Dieter had met Jim who had lived on Achill Island for many years. Jim ran a hostel and was a multi talented man. The people he had met on the Island were gifted with all sorts of talents: skilled craftsmen, technicians, good story tellers, great musicians. And Jim, for example, was also a survival trainer teaching young convicts how to master the challenges of wild life. Dieter noticed straight away after he had arrived on Achill Island that the people were very proud of their cultural heritage. And they loved talking about it when being asked by foreigners. Dieter thought about the German cultural awareness, what a difference! As to that the Germans were perhaps not as self-assured as the Irish. The natural and artistic surroundings of Achill Island really inspired Dieter and he decided to go and see Joseph [link to travelogue of painter workshop] his painter colleague. Joseph had told him about a sponge technique in his acryl paintings which Dieter wanted to learn. He wondered whether he should stay longer.
