Georg, the ponderer, in the train from Frankfurt/Main to Cologne
Gerlinde Kühn

The ICE-Train arrived in time Frankfurt/Main. Gerda and the others took their reserved sitting places and Georg seeked a place without a reservation for more than 1 hour from Frankfurt/M. to Cologne. With home thick attentive he looked out of the window.

He sat at his place, put his handy in the box and took his diary and meanwhile he turned over the leaves and an old identity card fell down. He took it and looked on the photo with two young boys, Georg as he was in Ireland and the other boy about whom he had no information's since 1946 in Ireland. On the back was written: (Herbert) (Herbert Miller, Hamburg, twinbrother Georg lost him in the Irish Sea - some later he will meet him again after 55 years during Steve's birthday party in Febr. 2001 on Achill Island) and Georg Miller, emigration-camp "Black Hills". Georg and Herbert were orphans and lived with friends of their parents in Hamburg. 1946 was a very bad time for all and bitterly cold winter and an extreme shortage of food which made life less comfortable. Sorry, that the farmer did not see the poorness. During playing with children they saw some rinds of bacon under the roof and some food in the cellar of an grocer's shop. (They have been waiting for better times on "Schwarzmarkt".)

So the guest parents and both boys were very happy to get an invitation to Ireland in 1946. The catholic church invited hungry German children and the first time they lived for quarantine in the camp "Black Hills".

Georg and Herbert spent a very good time there. But months later on he way back to Germany it happened: A shipwreck in the Irish Sea. Georg was rescued by an Irish Fisher boat (Fredrik, Sweden). But he did not remember anything and lived for some years with the fisher's family. They were very kind and with their help in 1948 his memory came back and than he wanted to go back home. But al that time Herbert had already left Hamburg and Georg could not find his brother Herbert.

It seemed to be that Herbert died in the Irish Sea and he hoped to find an answer during his stay on Achill Island. And he grew up in the guest family Mueller. That was the reason of the secret about his two family names.

While relaxing Georg closed his eyes. Colourful pictures came quickly into his mind: Gerda Huebsch reminded him of his wife (Gerda better should not know about it!). Tears overwhelmed him and places around Kassel they had been happy together, retrospectively appeared (Bergpark Wilhelmshoehe) and the (Dornroeschenschloss Sababurg).

Georg opened his eyes and saw that a conductor asked for the tickets. He seeked his ticket, fell hungry and took a bread with a smile in his face "proviant from home is the best". And as a revue a picture of (Brotmuseum Mollenfelde) passed.

Suddenly his handy rung and his grandchild Barbara asked him for the correct time of his arrival in Bruessel near the Information-desk on Bruessel-Airport. "Yes, my dear, everything's alright - happy to see you soon!" he told with a light in his eyes. Soon the next stop Cologne was near. He put all things together. And Lily waited near the door and smiled to him.
