So he waited.
He didn't really feel like getting up anyway. He had just found a comfortable sitting-position and wasn't going to move. Plus he couldn't be real sure if the computer and walkman would still be there when he returned from the dining car. And since he didn't feel like schlepping them around with him he stayed put and turned up the volume on his walkman. He stared at his notebook, then looked out the window noticing little houses fly by, waiting for an inspiration to hit him. Then he noticed a pair of eyes
watching him. What was she staring at? Was his music too loud? Oh, come
on. The noise the train made was so loud that he could barely hear the
music. He turned down the volume but she kept staring. After about twenty seconds their showdown was interrupted by a guy who had ploughed his way through the narrow aisle before. And by the look on his face Steve could tell that this guy was considering taking the seat next to him - the seat with his backpack on it. So he slowly began to zip his pack to signal to the man that he was willing to let him sit there. But he just stood there, with his expensive-looking leather bag and some other thing in his hand that Steve had never seen before.
