Cautiously, Steve
stepped towards the body and just stood there for a while. His head was
spinning. He hoped that she wasn't dead. He couldn't be sure, because of
the things he remembered from last night..
He finally found the courage
to lift the coat. He thought for a while and tried to retrace last night's steps. Impossible. He didn't have a clue where he was. And he was cold. So he decided to put on the coat. A damp coat is better than no coat, he reasoned. Then he decided to hail a taxi and try to convince the driver that he would pay him at the hotel. The first two attempts failed miserably. The taxis slowed down a bit, then roared off into the distance. Boy, that coat must really be something! The third taxi stopped, the driver looked at him a little suspiciously but was kind enough to take him to the hotel where Steve promptly paid him. Then he took a long bath, took a cat nap, went to have breakfast, and hurried to the station to catch the train to Westport.
